About Charity Program

Long and hard dry season in the whole archipelagoes of Indonesia in 1997, caused the failure of the agricultural harvest. Overwhelming decrease in stocks of rice and other foodstuffs added by poor distribution in the distant-isolated region led to steep rise in the prices of daily needs, and unavoidably made devastated starvation in many regions. The fire devastated 1.7 million ha of forest, and many people gave up millions of materials. 

The above conditions were worsened by the value of rupiah steeply dropped by about 500 percent within 6 months due to the huge amount of the foreign debt of the private sector and the loss of people's reliance on the government. Besides these bad situations, since the environmental impact was not solved yet, the new big problem emerges, which was the weakening of Indonesian "rupiah" to the foreign exchange rate, especially to "US$". Because of this, many companies bankrupted, and lots of people lost their job. This condition also affects to many un-employed people, having resulted many of them could not buy anything because of the high price and the lack of stock in the market. Many students from elementary school to university are threatened to drop out from their schools and many students can not continue to get the higher education. 

The government has tried to make an economic reformation drastically in order to recover this economic crisis, but it seems that it was not an easy problem to solve in a short time period. This crisis involved many aspects, techniques, institutional moral and trust; that was very complicated. 

We, the Indonesian students in Japan had been cooperating with the other Indonesians and international communities in Japan and trying to do many activities to collect fund to support the education and daily needs of the students and other people in Indonesia.

Aims and Programs

Love Indonesia 2001 is one of Indonesian Student Association in Kansai area programs. Love Indonesia 2001, this year is the fourth concert, is an charity concert which has some purposes. First, to introduce Indonesian culture widely to Japanese in Kansai area. Second, all the profits from the ticket will be contributed as scholarship for students who are studying in some universities in Indonesia and need to be supported economically. Last, to establish togetherness between Indonesian who live in Kansai, and to build friendship between Indonesian and Japanese, as the motto of this charity concert: "Mirai to Yuujou o Tsunagu Charithy Concert"

As we know that economic crisis in Indonesia since two years ago, has been deeply damaged almost all sectors. We, Indonesian students in Kansai had initiative to help our friends who have talent and bright future to continue their education. Every year, since 1999 the scholarship is given to 15 universities. At present, there are 150 students who are supported for one year, by the profits of the first charity concert. From the second charity concert in 1999 we can contribute scholarship to 16 universities. The scholarship is managed by Indonesian students who had ever studied in Japan, and now are working as researcher or lecturer in Indonesia. We are grate thankful to all participants who came to our charity concert and to all Japanese volunteers who worked hard together with Indonesian students intently.

As student in Japan, we have to finish our study in certain time. But we can not let what is happening in Indonesia is not our concern. We will return to Indonesia after finish our study in Japan, and we will be the bridge for Indonesia and Japan in the future.
